This Semillon has consistently blown us away both in the vineyard
and throughout its journey in the winery.
We took over the management of Gino’s Block in August last year
and unfortunately some of it had already been sprayed with
Glyphosate. 2 out of 4 rows of this Semillon did get sprayed but
moving forward it will only see organic preparations.
A hot and dry vintage with very little disease pressure led to some
magnificent fruit. It only saw a couple of sprays of elemental
copper and sulphur just before rain and was farmed with minimal
inputs after we took it over.
This Semillon was picked with all of our friends and fellow Local
Weirdos on the 7th of January 2020 and then taken to the very
generous folk at Swan Valley Wines where it would be vinifed.
The fruit was kept cool over night and then crushed the following
day. It was macerated on skins for 8 days at ambient temperatures
before being pressed to steel where it underwent elevage for almost
9 months. We felt this wine had sufficient hardiness, acid and
phenolics to not require sulphur and as such was bottled without
any additions whatsoever.
The resultant wine, Turbulent Juice, is a racy, energetic, high acid
romp with intense electric green apple acid, palate coating
phenolics and amazing length. It has an intense golden colour and a
beguiling lifted tropical fruit punch nose with a hint of Thai basil.
It has been termed avant-garde by fellow wine makers in the Swan
and we are just fine with that.
