Weirdo Credo
Local Weirdos was founded in 2019 by father and son, Sam and Larry Jorgensen, brothers Charles and Matt Stewart and weirdo Dave Cosford. Since that time we have all worked tirelessly to carefully curate and develop this project with this fundamental mission statement in mind:
‘Our aim through attentive minimal intervention viticultural and oenological practice, is to raise natural wines of character and soul.
Our wines sit at the intersection of basic joy and deeper complexity, and exist to highlight our passion for the preservation and celebration of our unique locality - The Swan Valley.’
To this end, we lease and manage a vineyard in the South-Eastern quadrant of the Swan Valley on a stretch of land called the Golden Mile. The vineyard is situated on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar and we acknowledge that we are working on the land of Australia’s First Nations People who remain it’s Traditional custodians. The soil is comprised of Loton’s Gravelly Sand and the vineyard was planted in 1986. We work with friends and family to manage it organically. It grows Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Grenache. Any other extraneous parcels of fruit that we have used since beginning this project have been from organically managed vineyards from the Southwest of Western Australia - including other vineyards in the Swan Valley as well as Frankland River and Albany.
In the winery we take care to produce wines that represent the terroir of the vineyards that the fruit hails from. This means we take a minimal intervention approach with the majority of our wines seeing no additions or subtractions - including filtration and fining. Occasionally we will add a small concentration of sulphites to give wines stability and pourability.
Wines made in this manner are generally termed ‘natural’ - which can mean different things to different people, but in our minds means organic viticulture coupled with minimal to zero intervention winemaking. A number of our wines would also fit the criteria for ‘zero zero’ winemaking - organic winemaking and zero additions (including sulphites) whatsoever. Zero zero winemaking is a secondary aim for our project and something that we enjoy experimenting with as long as the wines still hold interest and palatability.
Further to the above we have taken it upon ourselves to source as many of our dry goods, graphic design elements and stockists from small, local and independent businesses/people.
We love making wines that we love and we acknowledge that this project wouldn’t be possible without the help of friends, family, local businesses and of course, you. Thank you all. ”
